Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis procedures are termed invasive (require devices placed in your body). As such, bacteria and viruses can enter the body and cause infections. It's important that you and those around you take the steps to prevent infection. Refer to the infection-control guidelines for more information.

Dialysis patients are at an increased risk for hepatitis B and hepatitis C infections. Such illnesses can harm or destroy the liver. There is a vaccine for hepatitis B but it may have a limited effect for some patients. Your doctor should discuss the vaccine with you.
